It was in the year 1946 that three eminent retired Engineers, distinguished men of vision- Sri.D.V.Narasimha Rao, Sri .S.Ramaswamy and Sri.T.Ramarao set out from their resting chairs to build an Engineering College which is producing world class Engineers today. The National Institute of Engineering has the distinction of ardently promoting the core values of life and education while imparting quality technical education. Infact, NIE has taken lead in setting standards and giving direction to the technical education in Karnataka. Many distinguised alumni of NIE, both in academics and industry have excelled and shaped the destiny of cutting edge technologies in India and abroad, making us proud.

The NIE was affiliated to the prestigious University of Mysore till 2001 and for the batch of students admitted from the year 1998 onwards, it is affiliated to the newly established Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. We offer B.E. degree courses in seven disciplines, M.Tech in five disciplines apart from MCA course. Six of the Departments have been recognized by the Univerist as a research centres to offer M.Sc. Engineering by Research and Ph.D. degree programmes. During the previous convocation of the University, seven scholars registered at NIE research center received the Ph.D. award. The University has accorded Academic Autonomy to well performing 14 of the 144 Engineering Colleges affiliated to it in Karnataka during 2007 and NIE is one among them.

There are many centers of excellence catering to the technological need of the Industries, Society and the Government. The Training and Placement Cell is ISO 9001:2000 certified and provides comprehensive specialized training to students in identified skills and placement services to the students. About 40 companies conduct their recruitment process in the campus and all most all the eligible students get placed in one or the other companies.

The infrastructure created recently under Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP) project of the World Bank and the Autonomy provided by the University habe both synergized with the rich experience of the Faculty to bring in a new vigor and academinc culture at NIE.
